Marek & Veronique

Veronique Bouscasse has posted some video on her YouTube channel from the performance at the Welsh Centre I described in a previous post. I liked it, and apparently she does too. Here it is.

I'm not sure who made this video - I don't remember who was standing where the camera is. [Edit - it says that Daniel Martinez made it]. I'm never in shot, incidentally.

I think it's very nice and unpretentious. You can't see her face very well, which is a pity because I remember she looked really happy.

A couple of months ago she performed with Thierry Le Cocq in Tango Colón in Cologne. To be honest I didn’t like it at all. It was very fretful to say the least. She also didn’t strike me as particularly confident back then. But I like her so much better in this video; in fact it’s like a completely different person dancing here. I wonder, if it’s because of Marek or for some other reason entirely.

I suspect it's him. (He's lovely, and it's a style I'd consider much more fun for the woman, although some people might find it less exciting). But I don't know.

I love to dance the vals and I love the fact that this is a demonstration of social tango -unlike many of the demos I see at milongas which look choreographed.

Having said that, if I was being very picky I'd say that this is danced musically as far as the 3 beat rhythm of vals - but I don't feel there is much interpretation of the musical phrases. Also I find Marek seems to lack PASSION - perhaps too North European!? :-)

It was a very unpretentious performance. I know what you mean about the passion - I'd say that they have a certain presence, live, which does not really appear on video. I feel that video does rather an injustice to the impression they give as a couple. But I'm not sure quite why this is - it could also be that the good impression I got of their personalities in the class persisted and biased my view of their performance. Certainly when you're there you get the strong impression that they really like dancing in general, and that they like dancing with each other in particular, and that makes the performance more charming than its content alone.
