What's happening here?

What's happening here at 01:29-01:35? Is it led (obviously where she is going is led, I mean the way she is going there) and if it is her own variation what is it a variation on, i.e. what is he leading? Is it just a forward walk with some pivot or is there some element of lean-and-drag?

I think it requires a slippery floor and when I imagine making that movement I feel that it might be naturally inspired by a slippery floor. But it looks delightfully bonkers, I think it's great just there, and I want to know what is really happening.

Hat tip Alex, who has a post with eight different performances to this gorgeous milonga.

  1. I have no idea if I'm seeing it right, but to me it looks functionally like the volcada movement that Homer and Cristina do at about 1:11 and 2:00 in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-37Q_r-8PHw

I think he's essentially bringing her into a slight volcada and moving her while she embellishes to the music. (I think the volcada starts at 1:31, after her first couple steps forward.)

I may be entirely wrong, but that's how it looks to me!

  2. That was my long way of saying that yes, I think there's an element of lean-and-drag. ;)

  3. El Flaco and Silvina Valz! What can't they do... It looks like levitation, but I think he's simply walking backwards while supporting her weight. Watch his feet for a change: he's very grounded. He's might be leading the half-ochos very slightly. Normally a leader would support his partner's weight to prevent a step: I think this is just taking it a bit further, while walking backwards. Anyway, she knows this one: it's in most of their videos, but here it looks particularly amazing because the lighting is so excellent. Or maybe it is levitation! Magic.

  5. He;s taking over her weight - you can see him grasping her more securely just before lifting her - she is just superbly grounded and stays "down" - very good find, thanks!

  6. Ok, pretty clear consensus and so far, I think I'm convinced. It would be nice to test and see what works and how feasible a mini-version is, although I wouldn't want to go there without a LOT of trust. @MT, yikes, don't fancy the splits version much but you could be right. @Sophie - I really like how grounded it looks.

I love the way El Flaco dances.
