Everything in the festival so far has been far too expensive and too late at night, too close to my holidays, so I haven't bothered. Having been in the office all week, I still haven't managed to reset my clock properly. And my Tube station is closed this weekend for repairs. If you went to any of the classes I'd be interested to hear if they were good or well-attended; and I'd be particularly interested to hear how many people paid £25 to get into a milonga at the Bloomsbury Ballroom. I'm not saying they're wrong, I'm just saying they were never very likely to include me.
However, I will be at the dance floor outside Tate Modern this afternoon, wearing danceable street shoes, I think, and I'll stick around if I see anyone I know. It's free, and the weather looks nicer than last year. I think there are some other kinds of dance along the river so I may look at those too.
Hi, do you know if the outdoor dancing will be on next Sunday, too? I am visiting London then, and... :-) Cheers, Anca
ReplyDeleteHi Anca, no, it was just for the Mayor's Festival that weekend, and the festival has finished now. It was also a bit cold! For this coming weekend, I think most of the regular milongas are back on, so have a look at the milonga reviews for Saturdays and Sundays on the right hand side. Carablanca (Conway Hall) and El Once (the Crypt) are definitely on.
ReplyDeleteOops, I was mistaken, it's DanceTango this week at the Crypt.
ReplyDeleteHi there,
ReplyDeletemmmm, came down from Edinburgh to find some sunshine (and we got some), see some friends (which we did) and dance a bit...I liked the outside dancing (ok, it WAS a bit cold and the floor was slippy as hell and Tanghettto aren't really my cup of tea) especially on Sunday. It was lovely to see loads of people enjoying themselves along the river. The Bloomsbury Milongas WERE insanely expensive but Sexteto Milonguero were tremendous and the newly recontructed Orquests Tipica Imperial player well considering the circumstances...
I had a nightmare class, but that was mainly because of me and my real dislike of being taught in groups of men and women first before actually dancing together...
I did classes with Ruben and Sabrina and they were very good. Unfortunately a lot of people did not respect the level of experience required for the class so my partner and I just stuck to each other. The classes we attended were almost even, with only 1 lady over. There were about 12 to 15 couples in the classes I attended.
ReplyDeleteAlso, the Bloomsbury Ballroom milongas were very good. I thought they were over priced but there were performances by the maestros (2 couples per night, 3 dances each) and live band (for about an hour). We bought a package so it was discounted so it didn't feel that expensive. I don't know how anyone could pay £25 to get in. I noticed that a lot of ladies hardly even got a dance!
ReplyDeleteI heard so many people saying they were not going because you can't afford to pay £25 for a milonga... It may be fantastic, it may be London but £25 is a lot of muhoney. A lot!
ReplyDeleteIn my case, I had no idea who else would be there, and I'm not very interested in performances (with some exceptions).
