Most people didn't really know about it. It may be legit, but it was awkward. I am impressed how you researched this to clear up an issue that makes me tend to shout at the TV when Argentine Tango is on Strictly! :)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8391293127288856260.post-24636521407283124322015-04-07T21:43:48.744+01:002015-04-07T21:43:48.744+01:00Arlene: really - I did not know that. To be fair, it seems like par for the course and entirely legitimate in terms of the Mundial concept as a whole.msHedgehoghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05719152265628932122noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8391293127288856260.post-17982078431910412182015-03-29T10:02:12.973+01:002015-03-29T10:02:12.973+01:00I was at the so called World Tango Competition at ...I was at the so called World Tango Competition at Negracha and have to say it was a little bit of a farce. It wasn't well publicized and put on rather hastily. They were still accepting entrants on the evening, and it was delayed as there weren't many couples who entered. Vincent and Flavia were by far the best dancers, out of of the 6 or so that performed. It was strictly Salon and over very quickly. Giraldo was one of the judges and it wasn't soon after that he was choreographing V&F on Strictly Come Dancing. Call me cynical, but I believe that there was something else going on here. Just my observations and opinion.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8391293127288856260.post-17275323760786913022015-03-28T11:10:21.936+00:002015-03-28T11:10:21.936+00:00@MOCKBA, quite! If you scroll back through Valentin's public facebook posts to last summer, you'll see exactly what he thought of it (in English).

@David Phillips, thanks :)

@Preen and Ogle, I was hoping to make exactly that sort of awkward conversation easier. At least now you can tell an interesting story. And I think that if I'm talking about comparative prestige it's important to be as precise as I can and acknowledge the problems with the 'Mundial' (and in my view, the low artistic ambitions of stage tango generally - since stage tango *is* art) rather than just buying into the marketing. It would be interesting to know your teacher's thoughts on how it should be judged; perhaps they became convinced that they could improve it.

Also, thanks everyone for the face-to-face compliments on this post - it was worth the extra effort, as it turned out to be more interesting than I expected it to be.msHedgehoghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05719152265628932122noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8391293127288856260.post-37136565046325210602015-03-26T18:32:07.733+00:002015-03-26T18:32:07.733+00:00Thanks for your forensic and interesting post. Whe...Thanks for your forensic and interesting post. When non-tango but Strictly watching friends ask me if I agree that Vincent & Flavia are the real deal it is usually easier to change the subject. You are right that the 'Mundial' itself can be controversial. Some years ago on a dance holiday in Buenos Aires my Argentine teachers said that no true lover of Argentine tango would have anything to do with it. I noted the following year that they were now among the official judges of the event. But hey!, life is tough in Argentina and dancers have to make a living. So, good luck to them and the rest of the tango industry.Preen and Oglehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01252900865210008512noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8391293127288856260.post-50079838230954515962015-03-20T23:26:33.928+00:002015-03-20T23:26:33.928+00:00What an impressive lot of research and documentati...What an impressive lot of research and documentation.
